Hundreds Remember Teen, Woman Killed by Chicago Police
“For me to just look at the news and see that she was shot down – a handsome woman, a lovely woman”. Emanuel released a brief statement, in which he said: “anytime an officer uses force, the public deserves answers”.

Janet Cooksey – spoke at the conference and held a picture of her child wondering why the CPD was so quick to use lethal force instead of a Taser. One of the daughters asked one of the police officers, ‘Why did you shoot my mother?’ His response was ‘Your mother’s dead. Walker asked. “It’s ridiculous”.
High-profile killings of black men by police officers since mid-2014 have brought on waves of protest – including in Chicago, the country’s third-largest city – and fueled a civil rights movement under the name Black Lives Matter.
LeGrier’s mother, Janet Cooksey, told reporters that the Chicago Police Department has failed her and so many others.
“Something needs to be done, I used to watch the news daily and grieve for other mothers, and now I’m grieving myself”.
Chicago police didn’t say how many officers were involved, but they said that the officer or officers who responded were on administrative duty for 30 days and that the Police Review Authority would independently investigate the shooting.
Family members of two people killed by Chicago police on Saturday demanded answers after police acknowledged that one of the victims was killed accidentally.
Local media identified the two African-American fatalities as Bettie Jones, a mother of five, and 19-year-old engineering student Quintonio LeGrier.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued a statement saying he has asked the police department and the Independent Police Review Authority to immediately review the Crisis Intervention Team training that provides guidance on how officers handle calls for service that involve mental health crises. A neighbor, 55-year-old Bettie Jones, was also killed.
IPRA spokesman Larry Merritt said that he was unsure how long the investigation would take. He said Saturday it was “very early on in the investigation” and couldn’t release further details.
LeGrier’s father told the Chicago Sun-Times he had invited his son to a family holiday gathering before the shooting but he chose not to go.
In an emotional address and wearing a sweatshirt that said “Rahm Killed Us”, an apparent reference to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, Cooksey recalled her son’s participation in a charity marathon previous year and his time time spent on the honor roll.
The elder LeGrier said he heard loud banging on his locked bedroom door around 4:15 a.m. and that his son said, “You’re not going to scare me”.
Separately, Chicago police responded elsewhere to an “assault in progress”, faced an armed man and shot him.
LeGrier says he called his downstairs neighbor, 55-year-old Bettie Jones, and warned her about his son and not to open the door unless police arrived.
He said Jones told him his son was outside with a baseball bat.
Police did not say what, if anything, Jones and LeGrier had to do with the reported disturbance.
CNN affiliate WLS reported that LeGrier’s family said he suffered from a mental illness, though his mother disputed that characterization Sunday. When the father returned to his second-floor apartment early Saturday, the son appeared to be a little agitated, Antonio LeGrier said.
“You call for help and you lose someone”, she said. But he never had combative behavior. My son was happy. “No mom should have to bury her child”. She should not have to come outside open the door and be shot down by a police officer.
But Mrs Jones’s family said there was “a whole lot of anger” at her death.
Police said the shooting is under investigation and the case has been referred to the city’s main police oversight agency. Autopsies were not scheduled Saturday, medical examiner’s office spokeswoman Becky Schlikerman said.

Family members of the teen and woman killed Saturday by Chicago police said they are outraged and heartbroken by their loved ones’ deaths, and called for sweeping changes to the way officers interact with black residents throughout the city.
