Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. confirmed on Monday that the blockbuster movie franchise has been licensed for development into a theme park in Atlanta, and an indoor entertainment center in the neighboring island of Hengqin.

America’s “Hunger Games” theme park will cost an estimated $625 million, and Lionsgate is still working on securing the necessary funds to build. If construction begins on schedule, the park should open in Atlanta’s Avatron Park in 2019.

While still on its early stages, many developers and project partners are already excited about the project.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the executive said: “We’re always looking for ways to extend all of our intellectual property”.

“If you’re anything like me, it probably took a while for you to realise that the Hunger Games theme park wasn’t actually a prank”. It will be fascinating to see how an amusement park can construct rides and attractions around “The Hunger Games” series when the central, defining, titular story element is so, so dark. The Chinese 237,000 square foot compound should be completed in late 2018, while the United Arab Emirates’ park is scheduled to open its doors in 2016.
