For most films, the figure would be a coup, but the latest chapter of The Hunger Games collected the lowest opening take among the four movies in the series, Rentrak revealed.
Mockingjay – Part 2″ has fallen behind Bill Condon’s 2012 film “The Twilight Saga: “Breaking Dawn – Part 2”.
The film also brought in 146 million dollars (£96.3 million) at the worldwide box office over the weekend. The animated movie has now pooled in $108 million worldwide. The James Bond film has been huge in foreign markets, and has grossed $567.5 million world-wide.
The Peanuts Movie still maintains a spot on the top five list coming in at third with $12 million. Charlie Brown and the gang have grossed $98.9 million domestically.
There were two new entries this week, the first of which was The Night Before, with the comedy taking fourth place by pulling in just 10.1 million, and the second new entry, The Secrets in their Eyes came in fifth place by pulling in 6.6 million dollars.
According to The Wrap, while Lawrence’s film “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2″ managed to strongly ascend its aim with a$46 million on November 20, it had missed to hit the projected weekend total of $120 million. The R-rated film cost about $25 million to produce.
That was once again the case with Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, the finale to the blockbuster franchise that has grossed over 2 billion at the global box office, which underperformed even below the lowest projections, at least domestically.
Oscar hopeful “Spotlight”, from independent film company Open Road, earned $3.6 million after expanding to 598 theaters.
