Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 tops box office again
The final part in The Hunger Games saga had faced competition from a wave of new releases, including Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, but still managed to hold tight at number one over Thanksgiving weekend. That haul brings its worldwide total to $440 million after 10 days on release.

“Hunger Games” is still No. 1 at the holiday box office and fended off newcomers: Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” and “Creed”, the latest “Rocky” film. The Good Dinosaur has a much harder road to match that, especially with much less overwhelming word of mouth, yet it still racked up $55.6 million in its first five days and should hold onto the family demographic until mid-December.
Mockingjay-Part 2 wins the box office this weekend.
But Mockingjay Part 2 is still behind its predecessor, which earned $82.7 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend past year, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The movie takes place from the point-of-view of Igor and reportedly cost million to make, Deadline reports. The horror Christmas film, Krampus, won’t likely do well, and neither will the latest adaptation of Macbeth.
The opening was slightly sluggish for Pixar’s usual releases – they typically do more than $60 million on weekend opens – but it still was good enough for second place over the holiday. It added $51 million but still fell just short of hitting the $200 million mark. The animated film earned $56 million over the five-day period. The Ryan Coogler-directed film sheds some light on Apollo Creed’s son Adonis (Michael B. Jordan), who trains as a boxer under the tutelage of Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). The film has grossed $176.13 million domestically. “By the end of the run I think that will give us a number that rivals what other Pixar films have put up historically”.
The Night Before finished in 6 place with $8.2 million.
Rentrak’s top 12 domestic weekend box office estimates put Sony’s “Spectre” on the fourth spot at $12.8 million and 20th Century Fox’s “The Peanuts Movie” on the fifth spot at an estimated $9.7 million sales. The Ridley Scott sci-fi film opened in China to the huge amount of $50.1 million.
Oscar victor Eddie Redmayne saw a good start for his attempt at winning back-to-back Best Actor trophies as The Danish Girl bowed to an estimated $185,000 from four theaters for a strong $46,250 average.
