Sandra was about 555 miles (893 km) southwest of the Pacific port of Manzanillo on Wednesday afternoon, the NHC said. Sandra may weaken to a tropical storm or depression before brushing Cabo San Lucas, and could be a depression or even remnant before ever making a landfall in mainland Mexico this weekend.

The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds increased early Wednesday to near 100 miles per hour (161 kph).

Hurricane Sandra is expected to get stronger as it swirls off Mexico’s Pacific coast.

“Additional strengthening is anticipated during the next 12 to 24 hours, but weakening should commence sometime on Thursday or Thursday night”, the NHC added.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

After an active tropical season in the Pacific, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that yet another storm has developed just five days away from the official end to the hurricane season.
