Hurricanes Players to FWAA 75th Anniversary Football Team

The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced its 75th Anniversary All-America Team today (Thursday, August 20), and the team includes three former U-M players: defensive backs Charles Woodson (1995-97; 1st Team Defense) and Dave Brown (1971-74; 3rd Team Defense) and wide receiver Anthony Carter (1979-82; 3rd Team Offense).

Hendricks, known as “The Mad Stork” for his 6-foot-7, 220-pound frame, was a two-time All-American and made more tackles (327) than any UM defensive lineman.

The FWAA was founded in 1941 and has picked an annual All-America team since 1944, making it the season longest continuously selected team in major college football. He was also named the Delaware Athlete of the Year and the Amateur Athlete of the Year by the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association. And Bo Jackson is a third-team running back?

Following college, Singletary was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft with the 38th overall pick by the Chicago Bears. At the end of his college career, during which he rushed for 5,259 yards and 52 TDs, he held over 50 records on the school, conference and national levels. He ” s also been honored at the professional level as the AP’s Defensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in his first two season in the pros. The Big Ten came out with the most players on the list at 19, with three coming from Michigan and one from Michigan State. An all-time great at the Capstone, he was voted Alabama’s Player of the Decade for the 1960s and was also on the Tide’s Team of the Century.

Balloting for the teams began in the spring and involved participation from the entire FWAA membership.

The teams didn’t include head coaches, but Alabama’s Nick Saban probably approves of the selections. That committee put the finishing touches on selecting the 75-man team.

In 2008, Olsen was named to the 75th Anniversary All-Sun Bowl Team to commemorate the Sun Bowl Association’s Diamond Anniversary. Smith became a member of the inaugural class inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992. In all, there are 56 members of the National Football Foundation’s College Football Hall of Fame and 41 schools are represented on the three 25-man teams.
