Sam Foltz, the senior punter for the University of Nebraska football team also died in the crash, police said. LSU kicker Colby Delahoussaye was injured in the crash. The coach talked with Brown several times on Sunday and said the kicker was on his way back to Nebraska.

They had met at various kicking camps for about eight years and done this – gathering at Meyer’s place in the summer – for the past four years.

Tomlin believes that Sam ultimately wanted a shot at playing in the National Football League and has no doubt he would have been an excellent punter.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An evening he spent at a high school basketball game over the holidays revealed the best of Sam Foltz, the star Nebraska punter who died in a auto accident in Wisconsin over the weekend.

“We mourn today with the Foltz and Sadler families”, Kohl said. Word got around that Foltz was in the gym, and he was coaxed into participating in a halftime half-court shooting contest.

“They’re in a better place now”, Mortell said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Sam Foltz and Mike Sadler”, LSU coach Les Miles said in a statement issued by the school.

The outpouring of support came from both veteran coaches like Fitzgerald, who competed against Sadler when he was a four-year starter from 2011-14, and from new Big Ten coaches.

A second passenger was identified as Colby J. Delahoussaye, a 21-year-old male from New Iberia Louisiana.

Upon investigation it was determined that the vehicle was traveling westbound on Beaver Lake Road, lost control on the wet pavement, left the roadway, and struck a tree.

Wallschlaeger said there were no signs of alcohol at the scene. Though toxicology will be included in the medical exams that will be carry out she added.

Today was supposed to be the symbolic start of the college football season for the Nebraska football team and its fans. Foltz graduated from Nebraska with a degree in agronomy in May.

Foltz grew up on a farm near Greeley but played youth sports and went to school an hour’s drive away in Grand Island. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio and Riley posted their thoughts on Sadler and Foltz, respectively. It’s rare to see that kind of combination, but he was everything packed into one. “I know he made me better throughout my life”. “He could always find a way to break the tension”, Tomlin said.

“That was Sam’s makeup: ‘I want the biggest challenge I can get.’ It sounds cliche, but every Nebraska boy’s dream is playing for the Huskers. That definitely was part of it for Sam, too”, Tomlin said. Sadler was driving the auto, the sheriff’s department said. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. He loved every bit of it.

Fellow student-athletes, coaches and fans across the country and especially in the Big Ten responded to the news with an outpouring of support, and that support continued today as almost every head coach began their opening statements at the event by expressing their deepest sympathies with everyone affected.

“We just continued to build those friendships and spend time together, hanging out and relaxing”, Meyer said.

“On behalf of the Big Ten, we greatly appreciate the enduring contributions made by these two young men, and our hearts go out to their families during this hard time”.
