The Hy-Vee grocery store chain has recalled a brand of blue cheese because it might possibly be contaminated with the listeria bacteria, an organism that can cause serious or fatal infections.

The recalled cheese was sold in whole wheels and cuts re-packaged in foil or clear plastic wrap.

The cheese was sold in Whole Foods Market (WFM) cheese cases nationwide, the notice on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s website said.

The cheese to look out for has a use by date between January 20, 2016 and May 3, 2016.

The dairy farm had already announced two lot recalls earlier in February, expanded its recall on Feb. 26 to include 35 lots of one-, four- and eight-ounce wedges, two- and four-pound wheels and 43 batches of eight-ounce and five-pound crumbles.

The product was sold through distributors and other outlets between November 24, 2015, and February 11.

The Iowa Dairy Products Control Bureau discovered the contamination during routine testing at the Newton-based company.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled cheese.

Maytag Dairy farms has voluntarily suspended production and distribution while it collaborates with the FDA and the State of Iowa to determine the cause of the problem.

Customers should either discard affected product or return it to Hy-Vee for a full refund. It can also cause short term symptoms of high fever, stiffness, headache, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain in healthy people.
