‘I Have Far Better Judgment’: Trump Questions Cruz
The Texas senator is on the rise, particularly in Iowa’s leadoff caucuses, where he’s challenging Trump’s months-long lead.

The debate revealed little new about the candidates’ proposals for defeating the Islamic State. “Today, the Republican Presidential hopefuls, kissed good-bye to any support from the immigrant and Latino communities, a division that will probably last for decades…It is now up to us to educate, motivate, and mobilize the Latino community to march to the ballots next November and hold accountable candidates and elected officials for their word and actions against immigrants”. There was nothing on climate change except for a couple of dismissive asides by Trump and John Kasich. Trump had no answer. Radio host Hugh Hewitt asked Trump what his priority would be among aging nuclear forces, and Hewitt named the components of the triad: B-52s, missiles and submarines. Hewitt tried again, asking Trump his priority.
Security fears have reshaped the presidential race, though outsiders like Trump continue to dominate the Republican contest.
Gentle Ben Carson didn’t hurt or help himself in the debate. I have met with the senator on multiple occasions: he is brilliant, articulate, and informed.
Translation: I have no idea what this metadata argument is about.
“He’s a very nice person”, Trump said of Bush in a backhanded compliment, “but we need toughness”. And Trump, who has spent by far the least of the major presidential candidates, is firmly entrenched as his party’s front-runner.
“Out of 11 polls, Trump won all 11 polls”. As Bush soberly laid out policy prescriptions, Trump grimaced and made faces. But this is GOP primary politics, 2016.
Rubio, who previously emphasized criticism of Cruz’s national security positions, said his rival’s repeated attacks on immigration left him little choice but to examine the Texan’s record on the issue.
Cruz then cast Rubio as a supporter of “amnesty” and ally of liberal Democrats.
While Cruz has defended that course on multiple occasions in the Senate and in interviews, on Thursday he said he was simply calling his opponents’ bluff.
On immigration, both candidates fudged. And as part of the immigration reform debate in 2013, Cruz introduced an amendment that proposed eventual legal status for millions. Reagan famously stated, “Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem” (“Ted Cruz’s divisive politics: Our view”).
Most alarming, Cruz argued that the toppling of Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was bad for the United States – as would be the departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “If we expect to do this on our own, we will fail”, said Bush, the former Florida governor who came out swinging to try to revitalize his ailing campaign.

Rubio noted that Assad “is one of the main reasons why ISIS even exists to begin with”, though he added, rather mildly, that he “will not shed a tear” over Assad’s departure. The poll shows 73 percent of Florida Republicans would support Trump in the general election if he is the Republican nominee while 20 percent say they would not back him and 7 percent are undecided on the matter.
