I will not resign as Manchester United coach – Van Gaal
Smalling, who has played 90 minutes or more in all but two of United’s 29 games this season, insists the players are behind Van Gaal, but also said there is more than just the manager’s job on the line.

Louis van Gaal vowed to fight on as Manchester United manager after his team’s 0-0 draw against Chelsea.
“I think performances throughout the season have quite simply not been good enough, especially the past four or five weeks”, Scholes said on BT Sport. I can only work with my players and you have seen that my players are fighting for me and that they have given a good performance.
“After this result the fans were applauding. Of course, a lot of fans are disappointed because we need a win; I know that, the players know that, every member of staff knows that, the board knows that – even you know that”, the manager told manutd.com.
It was added that Van Gaal would make his final decision based on the performance against Chelsea and whether or not he felt the squad were still playing for him – something he later confirmed in his post-0match interview as he declared he will not resign.
‘I am under contract so it’s not a question of staying, it is a question of fulfilling my contract. “He’s done it before and he is capable to do so because he is a very versatile player and this is how we dealt with this situation”. We created some magnificent chances and for everyone in the crowd I think it was a attractive game. “Against a team like Chelsea, with such attackers, that’s not bad”.
With no available senior strikers and Cesc Fabregas missing through illness, Chelsea lined up with Eden Hazard as a false No. 9 and United duly dominated possession and territory throughout the match, though goalkeepers David De Gea and Thibaut Courtois were both forced into several impressive saves to prevent a breakthrough.
“We had two penalty cases, one the foul on Mata, the other the handball of Willian”, Van Gaal said.
“I don’t know what happened, to be honest”.
Hiddink, who took over three games ago when Jose Mourinho was sacked, said he was pulling the team together after months of poor results.
