Ian Wright defends Man Utd captain Wayne Rooney after Liverpool winner

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes Manchester United are still not out of the title race and a strong second half of the campaign might do the trick for them this season.

“We have a lot of matches still to go”, said the Dutchman. “It’s easy to say that with another player we would have scored, but we should not think about it at this moment. We have seen that today but we can do it because we show every week we can do it”.

But for the second time in a matter of days Arsenal was left to reflect on whether it had gained a point or in fact dropped two after a thrilling midweek 3-3 draw with Liverpool.

“In the second half, we came into the match, and you could see that”.

“The goal came from the first indirect corner and we ask for that as it always more unsafe”.

“I think it can refresh you and spur you on a bit more to prove to everyone just how good you are, and people don’t forget that”.

United claimed their fourth successive win against Liverpool after Wayne Rooney’s 78th-minute strike at Anfield.

The United job is expected to be the last managerial assignment of Van Gaal’s career, with the 64-year old having earlier said that he would hope to retire with a Premier League title after his time with the Manchester-based club.

“That is why we are here, to win our games and at end of the season to be in the first three positions of the league”.

Fans dressed as Father Christmas and Jesus display a sign for Brendan Rodgers, manager of Liverpool ” It’s a very open league this season.

“Rooney was at the back on his own to score his goal and it’s very frustrating”. “We didn’t prevent the cross, we lost (Marouane) Fellaini and lost Rooney”. Liverpool is eight points off Spurs, with its top-four ambitions taking a huge step back against the team’s biggest rival.

“We scored three the other night against Arsenal and we are creating chances but we just couldn’t finish them off against United for whatever reason”, the midfielder added.

Jürgen Klopp’s first taste of the famous Liverpool-Manchester United rivalry ended in disappointment with his team falling 1-0. We started 2015 very good, with a lot of wins and draws – we didn’t lose. “This is really hard to take”. His manager will be praying that Rooney keeps up the scoring streak, and continues to help the team get more wins in the upcoming weeks.
