ICC notes Chris Cairns trial verdict
Cairns, of Auckland, New Zealand, captained the Chandigarh Lions in three competitions in the Indian Cricket League, which flourished briefly before the ascendancy of the Indian Premier League, in 2007 and 2008.

The prosecution at Southwark Crown Court claimed Mr Cairns had lied when he promised during that earlier trial that he had never cheated.
The former all-rounder told the libel proceedings he had “never, ever cheated at cricket”, but the statement was said to be a lie.
Cairns sued Modi in London for libel and was awarded damages, but is now subject to the perjury action.
“It’s been hell for the last five or so years and in particular the last couple of years and now having won the legal case in the Royal Courts and now here …”
However, New Zealand Cricket board chairman Stuart Heal denied there had been any snubbing of Lance and said they would continue to acknowledge the contribution of both Chris Cairns and his father.
“I don’t think it’s a victory as such because I don’t think in a case like this there are any winners. It’s been hell for everyone involved”.
Yet the allegations against Cairns in that case, which led directly to his perjury trial resurfaced in December 2013 when he International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed it was investigating match-fixing claims involving three former New Zealand internationals. That means the jury could acquit or convict Cairns and co-accused Andrew Fitch-Holland even if split 11-1 or 10-2.
“I think overall, Brendon’s interpretation of what happened in 2008 has just changed”.
He said: “There’ll be some players sitting back there thinking ‘well why would I do that?” “I am aware of the verdict at Southwark Crown Court”, said Modi in a statement.
“As you already know I am restricted in what I can say as I am restricted by the injunction put in place following the 2012 libel trial”. “Yes there will be some reputational damage, but I’m proud of the fact that people did come forward”.
Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum, former captain Daniel Vettori, Mr Vincent, Mr Cairns and former Australia cricket captain Ricky Ponting all gave evidence.
When asked about Modi outside court, Cairns replied: “I think I’ll think about Mr Modi next week”.

But one measure of Cairns’s skill as a clean-striker is that even West Indies “master blaster” Vivian Richards – one of cricket’s greatest all-time batsmen – only managed 84 sixes even though he played almost twice as many Tests as the New Zealander.
