Ice storm warning extended for Oklahoma City

An Ice Storm Warning and a Winter Weather Advisory are in effect for the region through Saturday at noon.

Weather conditions will likely make driving hard, with downpours reducing visibility, in addition to the threat of icy roads. This very cold air mass sliding south from Canada will cause temperatures to plunge during the next 24 hours in many areas of the West, from Washington all the way to southern California. Forecasters are predicting a quarter inch or less of ice. DFW airport has already recorded over 55 inches of rain for 2015, shattering 1991′s annual rainfall record (53.54 inches) with more than a month left in the year.

Eventually this afternoon, the freezing line will shift to the northwest and all precipitation should be plain rain for the Oklahoma City metro. Rain will transition to freezing rain and sleet overnight.

Those traveling in the Midwest this weekend are advised to be wary. So, we’ll likely see the freezing rain begin to change over to all rain by this afternoon. A band of freezing rain and ice pellets is expected to develop as temperatures drop behind a cold front this evening.
