“They’re high-class fans and I knew that coming in”, Suzuki said through an interpreter after getting his 4,192nd and 4,193rd hits in the Miami Marlins’ 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. Miami outfielder Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4 in the contest to raise his professional hit total between Japan and the majors to 4,193, two more than Ty Cobb’s second-best major-league hit count.
The Cardinals had a 3-1 lead before the Marlins scored four times in the fifth.
Cobb, who played for 24 years mostly with the Detroit Tigers in the early 1900s, holds the major league record with a career batting average of.367, and is fourth all-time in stolen bases with 892. His first inning homer he said he just missed, lofting it more than he expected but enough to get out of the park. “Second one was a line drive”, Heyward, 26, said of two jacks in consecutive at-bats giving him a double digit home run total. Plate umpire Phil Cuzzi originally called Hechavarria out, but replay umpires in New York City reversed the ruling. Lackey surrendered nine hits, including a sixth-inning Justin Bour home run, but it was yet another solid start for the veteran right-hander, who now boasts a 2.87 ERA through 159 2/3 innings this season for St. Louis.
Derek Dietrich made the most of his time back in the starting lineup as his three RBIs helped the Marlins prevail against the Cardinals. The St. Louis Cardinals have won seven of their last 10 home games. Cosart has been slowed by vertigo.
Marlins: RHP Jarred Cosart will pitch in a simulated game on Monday.
The Marlins are one of only two major league teams he does not have a win against.
