ICO investigating Carphone Warehouse cyber attack

As BBC News reports, up to 2.4 million customers’ personal details may have been accessed, while as many as 90,000 customers may have had their (encrypted) payment details stolen.

The company has taken action to secure the affected systems and launched an investigation with a “leading cyber security firm” into determining the exact extent of the breach.

Asked when the data breach began, he replied: ” The evidence indicates within the last two weeks before Wednesday afternoon.

Dixons Carphone group CEO Sebastian James said in a statement issued today (Saturday, August 8) the retailer is now in the process of contacting those affected and is reviewing its security.

Dixons Carphone has now apologised to those affected and has pledged to put additional security measures in place.

The attack is believed to have taken place on one of the Carphone Warehouse’s divisions.

Those who connected via Carphone Warehouse direct (store or carphonewarehouse.co.uk) are understood to not be affected.

Carphone Warehouse, the UK’s biggest independent phone retailer, has confirmed it has been the target of hackers.

Other cases included an attack on Sony Pictures that reportedly originated in North Korea in retaliation to Hollywood film The Interview, which depicted the assassination of Kim Jong-un.
