Idaho Fish and Game halts online sales after computer breach

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FBI are investigating the hack into Dallas-based Active Network, the Washington State Office of Cyber Security said in a statement.

Washington halted all license sales after the intrusion was discovered last week, but resumed them Saturday through its network of 600 dealers across the state. Fish and Game shut down the online portion of the system the next day.

OR officials say they don’t believe personal information has been compromised by a hacking operation that impacted hunting and fishing license databases in four states. The Department said some personal information was accessed because of a vulnerability involving an outside vendor.

Licenses may still be purchased at ODFW offices and through a network of retail outlets through the state. The company boasts on its website that it processes half of all recreational licenses in the US, including the state of Idaho’s and several other state Fish and Game agencies.

The data breach apparently occurred sometime over the summer.

“Whether any of Idaho Fish and Game’s license buyers’ information was obtained has not yet been determined”, IDFG stated in a news alert issued Wednesday night.

The State is working with the vendor and law enforcement to determine how much information was actually accessed.

Hunters will have to wait to buy licenses until the sales system can be restored.

More than 2 million Washington records were exposed, officials said.

WDFW will provide updates about license sales on its webpage at www.
