Though most of the wheat had been cut before the fires started, bone-dry stubble still covers the prairie and the forests surrounding Kamiah are parched. Some in the region, about 160km north of San Francisco, had only recently returned after fleeing an earlier blaze. Residents in Boise, Idaho, have been told to prepare for evacuation at any time, The Guardian reported.
Wildfires racing through drought-stricken Southern California have burned at least 130 acres of land and one cabin.
That’s because major fires across the Northwest have left the supply line empty of more crews. Hillside neighborhoods in Marin were developed with little or no consideration for safe evacuation during emergencies.
About 130 firefighters are battling the flames in 100-degree heat. The Wenatchee World reported Saturday that an estimated 100 structures burned, including homes and cabins.
The rural home of Dean and Courtney Fox, situated 13 miles south of John Day, was among those destroyed by fire Friday.
