Idea, Airtel tank up to 9% on Reliance Jio’s lower tariff offers

The Preview Offer is now gone and now, it is the Free Welcome Offer from Jio. Ambani announced that “Pay for only one service – either voice or data, not both”. Moreover, the 4G service will be free for the first 90 days. Also, there are no roaming charges as well, so wherever you are in India, you can call anyone, any time, for free.

Ambani said his aim was to get about 100 million customers as early as possible. The promise of a never before pricing for data and free voice calls, something the Indian market hasn’t witnessed before, had already piqued user’s interest.

On the other hand, existing data charges hover around Rs 250 per GB which Jio proposes to bring down to Rs 50 per GB making the tariff the “lowest in the world”.

Ambani also announced a “free welcome offer” for Jio customers from September 5 till December 31. However, he declined to state what will happen to the apps after that. Reliance Jio still had many surprises under its sleeve. Initially, the service was limited to employees and for those who purchase a Lyf smartphone.

Incumbent telcos like Airtel have been trying out some variants of “free” voice, but since this is bundled with pretty expensive data, that is a deterrent.

On top of this, Jio is offering a 25 per cent more data on all data plans for students. You just have to visit any store where the SIMs are available and get the SIM card by submitting the documents. The company made Jio a significant push in the 4G telecom sector in the country.
