Much of the region was seized by rebels in 2014 after battles with the Syrian Arab Army and remains split between government and opposition control amid continued fighting.

“It seems that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad chose through targeting the Israeli aircrafts to deliver a message to the army’s Northern Command”, Maariv said.

It was the fourth such incident in nine days, and came as a new Syrian ceasefire brokered by Russian Federation and the United States came into force yesterday.

Errant fire from the fighting in Syria has occasionally been spilling over to Israel, usually causing no casualties or damage.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency later reported that the Israeli warplane went down near the town of Quneitra, while the drone was downed near Sa’sa’, both in southern Syria.

“In response to the projectiles which hit Israel today, IAF targeted artillery positions of the Syrian Regime in the Syrian Golan Heights”, the statement by the Israel Defense Force spokesperson read.

Israeli warplanes have conducted several air raids on Syrian army positions over the past weeks after stray shells hit the Israeli-controlled area.

Israel is also believed to be behind airstrikes in Syria against arms shipments destined for Hezbollah.
