The Indians lost, so the Tigers are now 2 1/2 games behind for the Wild Card, and 4 1/2 for first place in the American League Central. The Red Sox will be heading west in rough shape indeed. They’re also 1-4 in Rodriguez’s last five starts when he pitches the third game of a series and are 0-4 in his last four outings when he’s coming off four days of rest.

In the eighth, another former starter Clay Buchholz took over and ran into more trouble.

The Rays were swept in a three-game series at Chavez Ravine in 2013, the only other time they’ve visited the Dodgers’ hallowed home turf. Buchholz’s terrible season continues, as his ERA remains over six at 6.06. He made his lone appearance against Detroit last season, allowing just one run and three hits over seven innings.

The Red Sox chased him in the eighth, tying it on Betts’ triple when centre fielder Tyler Collins took a bad route before missing a diving attempt.

Miguel Cabrera’s homer was his 18th go-ahead hit this season, and his 10th go-ahead home run this year.

It was more of the same Monday night when the Sox loaded the bases in the ninth – and managed just one run. In the second, Travis Shaw lined a double into the right-field corner, scoring Jackie Bradley Jr. Sandy Leon followed and came through to continue his impressive 2016 season. Manager John Farrell was immediately criticized after the game, as Aaron Hill was left on the bench with the bases loaded and one away. Holt now has a.130 average in 23 at-bats against southpaws this season.
