IKEA Issues Major Furniture Recall Following Child Deaths
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Elliot Kaye speaks during a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, Tuesday, June 28, 2016. Ikea says anyone who owns a chest or dresser that is not mounted to a wall should remove them out of reach from children. The units include the MALM three-drawer, four-drawer, five-drawer and three six-drawer models and other children’s and adult chests and dressers. The recalled MALM chests were sold from 2002 through June 2016 for between $70 and $200.

Ikea would not confirm to CNNMoney what customers will receive under the recall, though the Philadelphia Inquirer reported full refunds will be offered. “It is simply too unsafe to have the recalled furniture in your home unanchored, especially if you have young children”.
On average, one child dies every two weeks from falling TVs or furniture.
“If you have or think you have one of these products, act immediately”, the Chairperson of the US Product Safety Commission said today in a statement.
Consumers can get a free anchoring fix kit to secure the chest of drawers to a wall or they can contact IKEA for a refund.

IKEA Canada said it will now only sell chests of drawers that meet the American Society for Testing and Material standard on free-standing stability. Three more children under the age of three have been killed by Ikea storage units since 1989.
The accidents were caused by the tip-over Ikea furniture.
All of the children killed were aged three or younger.
Two toddlers in the United States of America died during separate incidents when Malm dressers tipped and fell on them in 2014.
“Ikea chest of drawers are safe when attached to the wall as directed in the assembly instructions”, he said.
In an official statement released by IKEA: “It is clear that there are still unsecured products in customers’ homes”. Consumers with chests and dressers manufactured prior to January 2002 will be eligible for a partial store credit.

“Please take them out of the room”, said IKEA USA President Lars Petersen to NBC News.
