The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, according to tweets from Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady.

The fire happened around 1 a.m. Wednesday at a home on the 4800 block of 66th Place. When firefighters responded to the call, they found two people – a woman and her father – in the home, along with several pets.

Firefighters had to utilize an extinguisher to make Precious walk away from her owner – the rescuers noted that Precious never showed any sign of aggression…she just did not want to leave her owner’s side.

Out of the devastation came a touching picture of a dog standing guard over her injured owner.

The two-year-old pit bull was taken to the local shelter while Newell was being treated at an area hospital.

The fire was put out quickly and the cause of it is under investigation. The county that Landover Hills sits in has what is known as a Breed-Specific Law, which ban pit bulls on the dubious grounds that they are violent or aggressive.

It has been illegal to own a pit bull in Prince George’s County for almost two decades. Another dog and two turtles that were inside the home were removed safely.

“My heart broke, it melted when I saw that”, said Sandra Hamorsky, Maryland Dog Federation.

Police do not plan on pressing charges against the owner. Officials said the fire appeared to have started in a bedroom.
