Imam, associate shot dead after leaving NYC mosque

Police have released a sketch of the man suspected of killing of an imam and his friend.

UPDATE 6:16 p.m. EDT: Police identified the imam as Imam Alala Uddin Akongi, 55, a married father of three.

The organization says that while the motive for the crime is still unknown, nothing can justify the killing of two men walking from their place of worship.

“The community’s heart is totally broken”, said Uddin, who is not related to Thara Uddin. “It’s a great misery. It’s a great loss to the community and it’s a great loss to the society”.
