Is the new Ghostbusters better than the original? No. There is no real movie character to whom she can easily be compared; she’s a fresh, unique creation and it is impossible to look away from her no matter what her character is doing. Would the new version, starring some of today’s funniest female comedians live up to the beloved original? But I’m not here to review 1984 GHOSTBUSTERS. Which crew of Ghostbusters would we like best, the male or female?
Soon enough, Gilbert teams up with her co-author Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) and the eccentric paranormal investigator Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) to start facing off against the mischievous ghosts in town. In this case, the trio consists of childhood friends Erin and Abby, who have studied the paranormal and once published a book on the subject, along with Jillian Holtzman, a wacky nuclear engineer in charge of building their ghost-busting contraptions. Early on, I found myself wondering who was the new Egon and who was the new Venkman, et cetera, but even though there are a few personality traits shared here and there, none of the characters can be pigeonholed as “the new” whomever.
Though it doesn’t replace the original – the movie itself makes it clear it doesn’t want to – the new “Ghostbusters” is an absolutely delightful addition to a universe I had missed far more than I realized.
All four main characters were absolutely hysterical, and none of them were annoying or obnoxious; they were the ideal amount of amusing!
The all-star cast of Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon and Jones are tremendous as the leading characters here. Jones is one of the saving graces of this movie, but the ladies hire a stupid man played by Chris Hemsworth. This summer, they’re here to save the world! They set out to entertain people and make them laugh, and they did. But when news hit that they were casting women in the popular roles, the internet was filled with ignorant, hateful comments. There are scenes throughout the length of the credits and a scene after, so definitely stay the whole time.
I agreed with Erin 100%. It also paves the way for a new generation of Ghostbusters and “Ghostbusters” fans – and I sincerely hope that the joyfulness and fun of this movie wins out. It’s kind of nice to see the familiar Slimer again, but to what end? There were moments, especially early on in the film, where I jumped, but overall I found myself laughing.
‘I hate to be coy about it, ‘ the 53-year-old said. The cast does their best to elevate the humor but they aren’t always given a lot to work with.

Let’s face it, no one who goes to watch Ghostbusters is expecting to see an Academy Award victor, but if you’re looking for summer fun mixed with a bit of nostalgia, go see this comedy! If Ghostbusters meant a lot to you as a child, you’re probably nearly 40.
