An adult dose of a hepatitis A vaccine was given to about 250 immigrant children at a Texan detention facility, USA Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said. All 250 children are being monitored for side effects, but as mentioned by ICE representative Richard Rocha, who was quoted by the worldwide Business Times, “
No side effects caused by incorrect prescription are expected.”
Hepatitis A is a liver disease that can spread to people who aren’t properly vaccinated. The disease is often transmitted by consuming contaminated food or water.
“I’m guessing there will not be significant effects”, he said.
None of the affected children have so far experienced any adverse reactions, the officials said, since the vaccines were administered over the course of the last week. Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the vaccine is safe although, as it is in every pharmaceutical product, there are a few side effects reported. He also expressed concern that the children should be monitored regardless that they will not likely experience complications. “If anything, you may get a higher immune response”. The Office of Health Affairs of the Department of Homeland Security and ICE are currently investigating the origins of the error and in turn how to avoid such mishaps in the future.

Crystal Williams, executive director of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, which has provided pro-bono legal services to the women and children in the detention facilities, said in a statement that volunteers “have long noted disturbing patterns of what appears to be inadequate health care”. Immigrant rights activists and Democratic members of Congress have been calling on Homeland Security to close the centers, alleging that they provide substandard service and are no place for children.
