Immigration Discourse Impacts Trump’s Campaign

All this as Hillary Clinton is losing ground in the latest national polls, dogged by the Federal Bureau of Investigation publicly releasing its report on her use of a private email server as secretary of state.

Earlier on Monday, the presidential front-runner powered through a coughing fit in Cleveland, Ohio, and blasted Trump’s bungled visit to Mexico City.

Hillary Clinton said Donald Trump “choked” in his remarks over who would pay for a wall along the U.S. southern border following his meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Clinton called the short trip, which only lasted a few hours, “unfortunate”.

“He even got in a Twitter war with the President of Mexico”, she added.

Clinton paused throughout her Cleveland talk after a racking cough robbed her of words for almost two minutes.

“Every time I think about Trump I get allergic”, she squeezed out amid her hacking.

“He came out saying one thing and the Mexican president contradicted him nearly immediately”, said Clinton, referring to Trump’s claim that he did not discuss payment for the border wall, a centerpiece of his presidential campaign.

Clinton also accused Trump of “choking” Monday at a rally in Hampton, Illinois. “Finally spent a minute w/ them”, tweeted campaign manager Kellyanne Conway. Instead, Clinton said she is going to “focus on what we’re doing to create jobs here at home”.

Peña said he invited both Trump and Clinton to visit because it is important that Mexico have dialogue with whomever is elected in November.

In a joint news conference, the two avoided speaking about some of Trump’s more controversial comments on immigration; for example, building a border wall and forcing Mexico to pay for it.

Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has been highly critical of Mexico, saying the country sends rapists and drug dealers to the United States.

The situation was well defined by Todd Schulte, of the FWD network, who said, “we hoped that Mr. Trump would present a practical plan to stop illegal immigration in the future and provide a realistic solution for those who live in this situation in the country”.

In August, President Enrique Pena Nieto extended an invitation to Trump and Clinton to meet him on his turf, but only Trump accepted.

“I know that that’s what has been alleged and never proven”.

“And I think that is appropriate”, she said.
