The Montreal Impact have acquired the MLS rights to former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and are poised to sign the Ivorian forward, according to ESPN FC’s Jeff Carlisle.

Playing in French-speaking Montreal appeals greatly to Drogba, who hails from the Ivory Coast.

According to the report, Chicago had Drogba’s rights by filing a discovery claim, and Montreal paid over $100,000 for them.

It’s a move that makes sense on the field as well, with Drogba showing he can still perform at a high-level by scoring seven goals in 38 mostly substitute appearances for the Premier League champions Chelsea last season.

If Drobga truly hops to reign over North American soccer, a mountain in one of its northernmost outposts seems like an appropriate starting point. In 2014 the club went through a protracted attempt to sign U.S. worldwide midfielder Jermaine Jones that ended with the Fire getting nothing and the player ending up with the New England Revolution via a league-mandated (and much derided) blind draw.

Fire manager Frank Yallop has mentioned on previous occasions that the club will be targeting other reinforcements ahead of the close of the MLS secondary transfer window on August 6.
