Implicitly Rebuking Trump, Obama Praises Families Who ‘Understand Sacrifice’
Alaska’s other US senator, Dan Sullivan, said he condemned any statement or action, including recent remarks by Trump, that undermines the sacrifice of Capt. Khan and his family, or any of our other fallen American soldiers.

Without specifically referencing Trump’s comments about the Khizr and Ghazala Khan, and without naming the GOP nominee himself, Obama said family members of Gold Star recipients “represent the very best of our country” who deserve the nation’s respect.
Meanwhile, newly elected VFW national commander Brian Duffy said Monday that Trump’s comments were “out of bounds” and might have a lasting impact.
In reacting to the major controversy that ensued after Donald Trump suggested that Ghazala Khan didn’t speak about her late son at last week’s Democratic National Convention because her husband Khizr wouldn’t “allow” her to do so, Mitchell came out with a brand-new defense of his favorite candidate. Trump stoked outrage by implying that Ghazala Khan did not speak while standing alongside her husband at last week’s Democratic convention due to their Muslim faith.
A joint-letter published overnight through VoteVets was signed by family members of 11 servicemembers who were killed in Iraq, including 1st Lt. Neil Santoriello, Private 1st Class Steven Sirko, 2nd Lt. Christopher Loudon, Naval Corpsman 3rd Class John House, Cpl. Humayun Khan’s service and life, as well as his parents, should be honored in the highest regard.
Said Duffy: “There are certain sacrosanct subjects that no amount of wordsmithing can fix once crossed”.
Many times Gold Star families can feel isolated because they no longer share that connection to the military community.
Thornberry’s response follows sharp criticism of Trump from Republican Sen.
Trump has previously said McCain shouldn’t be regarded as a war hero for being imprisoned in Vietnam, saying “I like people who weren’t captured”.
“Michelle and I have spent countless hours with them, we have grieved with them”, Obama said.
Trump has made a string of unconventional and controversial statements in recent days, including suggestions he might not back the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation pact as president and an invitation for Russian Federation to hack Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails.
“America’s military is the most capable fighting force in history-and we’re going to keep it that way”, he said. “I actually saw her standing there as a kind of strength”.
The Schauweckers didn’t want to comment on the speech, or the political backlash now swirling around Donald Trump.
“It’s going to be a lot of work, going to take a lot of money, but it’s going to be well worth it”, she said.
Asked about that speech during a weekend interview with ABC, Trump questioned whether the words were Khan’s own. She said he died within a week of the Khan’s son, Humayun, and that the two were buried in the same row at Washington’s Arlington Cemetery.

“I was viciously attacked by Mr. Khan at the Democratic Convention”. Trump tweeted. “Hillary voted for the Iraq war, not me!”
