Improved Tesla Model S among world’s fastest-accelerating cars, company says

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said that only the LaFerari and the Porsche 918 Spyder with gas engines were faster, adding that the limited-run two seaters were million-dollar speciality cars that could no longer be bought.

Not everyone is going to be able to buy the new Model S, but the new auto will help pave the way for Tesla’s other, much more affordable vehicle.

He said there will be a new 100-kilowatt hour battery option for both the Model S and Model x that will extend the range of the vehicles. Those who already have their P90D cars can also upgrade but they will need to pay $20,000 as their existing 90kWh battery pack will have to be recycled. Tesla brought some upgrades to their high-end model S which made it world’s fastest commercial vehicle.

The Model S P90D previously had a range of 270 miles.

Tesla customers who have ordered P90D Ludicrous but haven’t received the delivery can now upgrade to P100D for $10,000. The upgraded Model X is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 2.9 seconds.

Model X in Ludicrous mode can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds and will have a range of an estimated 289 miles for EPA and 542km in European Union on single charge. The average Tesla was giving around 180-200 miles per charge on a big battery up till now. Tesla says this also makes it the third-quickest production vehicle in the world, overall.

Musk said development of the battery has been challenging and that the production volume would be low due to the challenge of manufacturing a pack that is so complex.

The Model 3 is Tesla’s $35,000 electric auto for the masses, revealed last spring.

The Model X gets a similar treatment. For those ordering fresh, the Model S P100D starts at $134,500, while the Model X P100D starts at $135,500.
