He has reunited the Beatles, sort of.

A drum kit Ringo Starr used to record some of the Beatles’ early hits has sold for $2.2 million at auction to the owner of the Indianapolis Colts, an American football team.

Also available is a guitar used by John Lennon, which he gave to Starr in 1968, some of the drummer’s signature rings and his own copy of The Beatles’ White Album, marked as number 0000001. “Finally, after 45 years, the Beatles are together again”, Irsay texted the AP, likely referring to other Beatles instruments in his possession.

The two-day auction, which began on Thursday, included more than 800 items owned by Starr and his wife, actress Barbara Bach.

But Starr wasn’t the only Beatle to smash the skins on this kit, the drums were also used to record Pul McCartney’s first solo record titled McCartney.

Meanwhile the Rickenbacker guitar gifted to him by John Lennon went for $910,000 (£602,000) at the sale, which was held at Julien’s auction house.

Irsay is a long time rock collector.

It runs between 3 December and 5 December, and includes the very first pressing of The Beatles’ critically acclaimed so-called White Album, bidding for which was expected to start at around $20,000 (£13,276). A portion of the proceeds will benefit the couple’s Lotus Children Foundation.
