In dramatic turnaround, Cruz decides to vote for former arch-rival Trump
“My rule has always been to give the other candidate the first chance to be the fact checker and if he doesn’t pick up on that, then you call the guy on it”, Schieffer said.

The move may be a recognition by Cruz that his future is limited at the presidential level without Trump supporters, despite an earlier calculus that if Trump were to lose in a blowout, those voters would look toward Cruz in four years.
Debate veterans say it’s best for the questioners to stay on the sidelines – and let the two candidates do the sparring themselves. “It’s mourning in America for conservatives”. “We lost our leader today”.
Cruz has positioned himself as an incorruptible truth teller, and for some of his fans, this went too far.
Trump and Cruz have had a bumpy relationship.
The Texas senator fought Trump in a bitter primary battle, marked by mud-slinging and personal insults. “I’ve made this decision for two reasons”. He was a tough and brilliant opponent.
Friday’s announcement from Sen. “Mike Lee, who would make an extraordinary justice – and making an explicit commitment to nominate only from that list”.
“Based on the fraud committed by Senator Ted Cruz during the Iowa Caucus, either a new election should take place or Cruz results nullified”, Trump tweeted in February. Jeb Bush – mocked by Trump as “low-energy Jeb” – is still withholding support.
Cruz nonetheless pressed his case for the Trump endorsement, at one point elaborating on what he called a “significant factor”: Trump’s decision Friday to release a second list of people he would appoint to the U.S. Supreme Court. The bromance and truce finally evaporated in January, in a testy debate showdown.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has focused heavily on the swing state and plans a rally in Roanoke on Saturday evening. Others have been more explicit, saying outright that they’ll vote for Trump.
Cruz began critiquing him as a closet liberal. “Hillary ClintonHillary Rodham ClintonClinton postpones trip to Charlotte No Fortune 100 CEOs back Trump Trump, Clinton to meet with Netanyahu Sunday MORE is manifestly unfit to be president, and her policies would harm millions of Americans”. “Last year, I promised to support the Republican nominee”.
“I think in a race this close, every tiny, little bit helps, so I don’t think it’s a game changer, but it certainly keeps us moving in the right direction”, Wendelboe said.
What political news is the world searching for on Google and talking about on Twitter?
This despite months of scathing disapproval.
During the primary campaign, Trump had criticized the appearance of Cruz’s wife Heidi, in a retweet, and had repeated unsubstantiated and false speculation about whether Cruz’s Cuban-born father was involved in the Kennedy assassination.
The flip-flop was a stunner since the Texan was booed lustily during a floor speech at his party’s convention for urging Republicans to “vote your conscious” without naming Trump.
At the convention, Cruz dramatically declined to endorse the nominee. But the damage was done.
Meanwhile, Trump campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, who previously worked for a super PAC supporting Cruz, expressed her relief on social media.
The backlash among Texas Republicans didn’t die down after that breakfast. He even threatened to sue Cruz over it.
The issue has weighed heavily on Cruz, 45, who faces re-election to the Senate in 2018 and has kept the door open to running for president again.
“The campaign had never said that before”, Cruz said. Wait, no. But you get the idea. “You try not to take offense”.
“Ted Cruz didn’t win Iowa, he stole it”.
Cruz aides have not commented. To them, it seemed obvious – given his views on Clinton – that no Republican could cast a vote of conscience for the Democratic nominee. But there is some connective tissue between the camps. “Submissive conformity to Trump – a man who personally slandered Cruz’s family and hasn’t apologized – just cements Trump as the unopposed alpha in the GOP and hangs Cruz’s conservative resistance out to dry”.
Cruz’s endorsement was widely panned by his backers and former staffers. He knows the county chairmen and the fundraisers. But I don’t want his endorsement.
Cruz’s detractors gushed venom as the news emerged.
