In Iraq: Blast in northwest Baghdad claimed by Islamic State

So-called Islamic State has said it was behind a suicide bomb attack on a security checkpoint in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, that has killed more than 20 people and injured at least another 35. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but the Daesh jihadist group carries out frequent suicide bombings targeting both Iraqi security forces and members of the country’s Shiite majority, whom it considers heretics.

The bomber detonated the device at one of the busy entrances of the Shiite district of Kadhimiyah, killing at least 10 civilians and four policemen and wounding 31 others.

This latest suicide bombing comes on the heels of the July 3 terror attack in Baghdad, considered the worst in recent history.

Sunday’s attack came just weeks after the deadliest terror attack in war-weary Baghdad in years, when a suicide truck bomb plowed into a busy shopping district killing nearly 300 people.

The group still controls areas in northern and western Iraq.

A report by UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) estimated that 662 Iraqis were killed and 1,457 others wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in June across Iraq.

The government also ordered its security personnel to stop using fake bomb detectors it has used for years and that were widely known as useless.
