A lorry in central Mexico has ploughed into a religious procession, killing at least 16 pilgrims and injuring about 30, officials say.

The Associated Press (AP) reports that a heavy truck carrying building materials lost its brakes on the town’s main street Wednesday afternoon.
The dump truck “was apparently left without brakes and struck the crowd”, which was heading to a Catholic church, an official in the state’s civil protection agency told AFP.
Local media showed pictures of the dump truck turned on its side.
The toll could increase as numerous critically injured have been admitted to hospitals, Xinhua quoted Jaime Santoyo Castro, secretary general of administration, as saying.
The town was celebrating the festival of its patron, Jesus Nazareno, with a procession to the church of San Gregorio Magno.

There was no immediate information on the condition of the injured or whether the truck’s driver had been taken into custody.
