In online first, ‘exploding watermelon’ takes the cake
All it took was an exploding watermelon to harness the power of Facebook Live.

Here is a short clip of the final explosion.
At one point, more than 800,000 viewers were awaiting the results of the experiment.
Hundreds of thousands of people watched the stream live on Facebook, and the video had been shared almost 9,000 times by around 4:15 p.m. Friday.
“I want to stop watching so bad but I’m already committed”, one Facebook user wrote.
“I wish this wasn’t live”.
The live stunt Friday placed a major spotlight on Facebook Live, the social media company’s push to get people to stream live footage of anything and everything in their lives.
What does it take to bring 3 million people together online?
Two Buzzfeed employees, dressed head-to-toe in protective clothing and goggles, counted aloud as they wrapped one rubber band after another around the watermelon. Facebook Live rolled out to celebrities and public figures last summer and was more widely distributed this year.

With tension rising at BuzzFeed, the watermelon began spewing juice at 660 rubber bands until its top blew off at 690 to a round of cheers, followed by a partaking of the fruit inside. But it would be wise to remember that despite the growing potential of Facebook Live, not all videos will be as wildly successful as the “Watermelon Explosion” challenge.
