Savchenko was captured by rebels and brought to Russia under murky circumstances, though Russian authorities say the Ukrainian crossed the border on her own and was lawfully detained on Russian soil.

Nadiya Savchenko faces up to 25 years in prison for her alleged involvement in the killing of two Russian journalists.

“Three Russians were relaxing at an artificial lake situated on the Russian territory near village Novorussky in the Millerovo district of the Rostov Region and decided to take pictures at the background of the Ukrainian checkpoint Krasnaya Talovka”, the FSB border department said.

Savchenko has denied the charges and refused food for more than 80 days to protest at her detention. She broke off her hunger strike in March because of severe health problems.

Moscow denies any involvement in Ukraine’s 15-month conflict and describes Russians caught in the war zone as “volunteers” who joined the fighting without any direct orders from the army. Since her arrest, Savchenko has been elected as a deputy in Ukraine’s Parliament and is a delegate to the Council of Europe, giving her diplomatic immunity.

“When will she be able to get some rest if the trial takes place every day?” the lawyer said.

“According to the billing of Savchenko’s two telephones, the first telephone was registered at the center of Luhansk at 10.44 hrs”, Novikov said.

“We’ll be working on the assumption that the sentence has already been written and it’s the harshest possible”, said lawyer Ilya Novikov.

Over 160 people in the city of Horlivka in Ukraine’s southeastern region of Donetsk have fallen victim to shelling conducted by Ukrainian forces in the past six months, the mayoral office said on Friday.

Kiev and the West accuse Russian Federation of sending weapons and troops across the border to help separatists in a conflict that has claimed at least 6,800 lives since April 2014.
