Endurance epic “The Revenant” has been named best picture at the British Academy Film Awards, while its star Leonardo DiCaprio won the best actor prize.

According to bookies, it is one of the closest contests in recent history with Spotlight the favourite, closely followed by The Revenant and The Big Short.

The documentary on late singer Amy Winehouse, titled Amy, has been nominated for Outstanding British Film as well as in the Documentary category.

Golden Globe victor Brie Larson, who also received a Screen Actors Guild award for her role in Room, and Londoner Bel Powley, who starred in The Diary Of A Teenage Girl, round off the nominees vying to be voted the next major star of the future.

Irish/British co-production Brooklyn picked up six nominations, including Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan, Best British film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress for Julie Walters, Best Costume Design, and Best Make Up & Hair.

Irish actor Michael Fassbender was nominated his portrayal of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in Danny Boyle’s film of the same name, where he will face off against last year’s victor Eddie Redmayne, as well as Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Superb (but underused) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Game Of Thrones actress wore a gown that made her look too blocky.

Two black actors have been nominated for BAFTAs this year: Idris Elba for best supporting actor and “Star Wars” actor John Boyega for a rising star award. The BAFTA Lancome Nominees’ Party, which was attended by stars including Cate Blanchett, Cuba Gooding Junior, Eddie Redmayne, Emilia Clarke and Mark Ruffalo, was held on February 13 within the venue’s red silk-walled King’s State Apartments.

The Baftas are often an indicator of Oscar success.
