Income Up 8.6 Percent For Wal-mart, Company Raises Full-Year Guidance

Wal-Mart said sales at USA stores open at least a year rose 1.6 per cent, excluding fuel price fluctuations. Wal-Mart says that with the deal it will be able to grab a higher-income customer who typically is younger than its own shoppers.

Wall Street was expected earnings of $1.02 per share on revenue of $120.3 billion. Shares of the company havew now surged almost 18% since the start of current year, compared to Dow Jones Index which rose merely 6% in similar time frame. “Our strategy to turn things around is focused on improving the retail basics”, said Wal-Mart CEO Doug McMillon.

To accelerate its e-commerce business and narrow the widening gap with rival Amazon.com Inc, Wal-Mart recently paid more than $3-billion to acquire internet retailer Jet.com, the highest price ever for an online startup. WMT fell -0.21%, plunged -0.61% and advanced 12.65% in the week, one month and six months, respectively. Analysts had expected $4.27.

Today analysts at RBC Capital Markets reiterated Wal-Mart Stores Inc’s (NYSE:WMT) shares as “Underperform” in a report released to investors.

The analyst stated that the investment firm has set a price target of 78 on shares of NYSE:WMT. Talk Business & Politics will update this report or post a new report following the call. E-commerce sales positively impacted comp sales at Wal-Mart U.S.by 0.40% in the quarter.

The group, which accounts for almost 10 per cent of USA retail sales, was boosted by a 6.5 per cent increase in revenues at its supermarket-sized Neighborhood Market, which helped like-for-like United States sales rise 1.6 per cent. The average ticket was up 0.4%, better than the 0.2% gain in the second quarter of 2015. On a constant currency basis, operating income increased 4.2%. That was offset by a drop in global sales, which fell to $28.6 billion from $30.6 billion. Record dollar sales of $2.3 billion, up 5 percent; volume up 1 percent. 1 analysts have suggested “Sell” for the company. However, much of the gain is attributable to the sale of Yihoadian. Same store sales grew 1.6%, beating the consensus of a 1% increase. Higher EPS estimate that can be reached in this quarter is determined at $1.08 and lower forecasted EPS is placed at $0.98.

Wal-Mart expects USA comp sales growth of around 1% to 5% for the 13-week period ending Oct 28 compared with 1.5% comps growth previous year.

Sales at supermarket chain Asda have plunged 7.5% as the company reported its worst ever quarterly performance. The company attributed the decline to “investments in people and technology” and currency fluctuations.

The shares have been up 19 percent this year through Wednesday’s close.

Wal-Mart’s shares traded up almost 1.5% in premarket trading Thursday morning, at $74.00, in a 52-week range of $56.30 to $74.80.

And Wal-Mart fetches nearly 17 times projected earnings over the next 12 months, close to its highest forward multiple over the past decade.
