Mr Gotho has official documentation which shows his age, and the Indonesian records office says it has confirmed his birth date as December 31 1870.

He has outlived four wives and all 10 of his children and now has grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

During an interview with a regional news network, he revealed that he wants to die. Now his grandchildren were independent, he said, he had nothing to live for.

If his documentation is authentic, it would make him the oldest human on earth; a title now held by by French centenarian Jeanne Calment, who was 122 when she died.

Gotho’s grandson said he had bought a grave near those of his children when he was 122 and had been preparing for death ever since.

His nearest living relatives are grand children, great grand children, and great-great grandchildren.

“The gravestone there was made in 1992”.

Members of the family said Mbah Gotho now spends most of his time sitting and listening to the radio because his eyesight is too poor to watch television.

And the incredible man claims that the secret to staying alive for so long “is just patience”.

Whether or not he will ever be listed as the world’s oldest man however is open to question, as the paperwork has so far not been independently verified.

But Mr Gotho has said he is ready to die after reaching such an unbelievable age.

If so he will join others without verifiable records who are believed to be older than Mbah Gotho – 171-year-old James Olofintuyi from Nigeria and 163-year-old Dhaqabo Ebba from Ethiopia.
