Independence Day Box Office: Resurgence Comes in Second

Pixar’s latest concoction, Finding Dory, the sequel to the studio’s similarly successful Finding Nemo, is looking at a $73.5 million take in its second weekend, beating out Independence Day: Resurgence and two smaller openers, The Shallows and Free State of Jones. Meanwhile, Independence Day: Resurgence looks to come in with $41.6 million, which isn’t a disaster by any means but still is on the lower side of expectations for the Roland Emmerich-helmed sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day.

Other debuts this week: the Blake Lively shark attack move The Shallows bowed with $16.7 million domestically while the Matthew McConaughey Civil War movie, Free State of Jones, earned almost $7.8 million.

Even though it had a massive marketing campaign with headliner Matthew McConaughey appearing all over the televison interview shows, “Free State of Jones” only mustered $7.8 million putting it in 5th place.

Along with the smaller horror film “The Conjuring 2” ($86.9 million in three weeks for Warner Bros.), the acclaimed “Finding Dory” has been the major exception.

Independence Day 2 placed No. 2 behind Dory. The action-comedy about a spy who recruits a high school buddy for a caper stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart.

Other films also had solid overseas numbers, including “Now You See Me 2”, which opened in China over the weekend. It cost $50 million to make but STX’s exposure is under $10 million.

Broad Green’s release of Amazon’s “Neon Demon”, starring Elle Fanning in a dreamlike fashion world film, generated little traction with $606,574 at 783 locations – a limp $783 per screen avaerage.
