Walt Disney Co’s Finding Dory placed first at the box office for a second weekend, beating the modest opening for Independence Day: Resurgence, a big summer release from Twentieth Century Fox.

According to Box Office Mojo, the long-awaited sequel to Independence Day only grossed $41.6 million. The film went on to make over $300 million domestically and over $800 million worldwide. At least one more sequel is possible, but with the tendency of many film franchises to decrease in profitability over time, Universal is probably looking hard at whether or not the Blizzard game is worth the long haul investment. The sequel to “Finding Nemo” stays atop the chart after breaking a new record with $135.1 million debut last week.

Two movies debuted in the fourth and fifth positions, Sony’s shark thriller “The Shallows” at 16.7 million dollars and STX’s “Free State Of Jones” at 7.8 million dollars. The comedy option, “Central Intelligence, ” starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, held strongly in its second week, earning $18.4 million. In the crowded field, some gambles didnt pay off. It’s also the best second weekend for an animated title.
