The banned CPI-Maoists is the fourth dreaded terrorist outfit in the world after Taliban, Islamic State and Boko Haram, according to a study conducted by the United States (US).

A total of 289 Indians died in terror strikes in 2015. The three were followed by CPI (M). Taliban was held responsible for 4,512 lives in 1,093 strikes while IS claimed 6,050 lives in 931 attacks.

What is noticeable is the revelation that over half the terror attacks in India took place in four states – Chhattisgarh (21%), Manipur (12%), J&K (11%) and Jharkhand (10%). Chhattisgarh, which has been a victim of Left-wing extremism, suffered double the attacks as compared to 2014 – 167 as compared 76 in 2014, it said.

The report by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism said that Maoists were behind 43 percent of the attacks, 343, took place in India past year. Of this, Naxals alone kidnapped/took hostage 707 persons a year ago compared with 163 in 2014.

However, the data collected by Home Ministry also revealed that as many as 2,162 civilians and 802 security personnel were killed by Naxals between 2010 and 2015. Most of the dead were “tribals”, often branded as police informers.

With the rise in the number of attacks, number of terrorists killed also witnessed a 20% rise.
