Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar on Thursday wrote to Islamabad, suggesting ways in which Pakistan could expedite the trial in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks case.

In the letter, Jaishankar suggested several ways which Pakistan could use to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice, including cooperation through legal channels.

“As you know, the entire attack was planned from Pakistan, was perpetrated by Pakistani nationals, all the evidence is in Pakistan, but eight years have passed and the trial is happening at a snail’s pace”, he said. However, India hasn’t heard back from Pakistan regarding the same.. Pakistan received the letter on September 9 and has not yet responded.

The trial has, however, not moved expeditiously.

A resident of Gujrawala district of Punjab, approximately 80 km from Lahore, Zafar was among 21 absconding suspects wanted in this high-profile case.

LeT operations commander Lakhvi, Abdul Wajid, Mazhar Iqbal, Hamad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jameel Riaz, Jamil Ahmed and Younis Anjum are accused of abetment to murder, attempted murder, planning and executing of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

This latest move comes at a time when Islamabad is preparing to raise Kashmir issue at the United Nations this month, with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif leading the charge.
