India asks Pakistan to take action against Hafiz Saeed

On Hafiz Saeed, who heads the Lashkar-e-Toiba militant group that India blames for planning and executing the 2008 Mumbai attacks, being reportedly seen on Pakistan television lauding the Pathankot attack, Swarup said: Saeed was a “globally designated international terrorist”.

“Hafiz Saeed is a globally-designated international terrorist. Their declare that his top companies are now undertaking charitable work in not really a fig leaf…

“He indulges in terrorist activities and terrorist financing. “Hafiz Saeed is an internationally designated terrorist; it is for Pakistan to put a stop to his activities”, the ministry of external affairs said.

He claimed that Indian soldiers committed “genocide” on Kashmiris and included: “Don’t they’ve the right to carry Pathankot out -type assaults due to their protection?”.

“In October, we had seen that the Pakistan government had banned the electronic coverage of some of these organisations including the one to which Hafiz Saeed belongs. Issues can easily escalate”. India feels the bare minimum they could have done is registering FIRs under relevant sections against those suspected and already apprehended.

Strategic analyst Ayesha Siddiqa said Saeed’s praise of Salahuddin could be part of a “deflection strategy” to steer blame away from Jaish, and by extension Pakistan, where it is based.

“Both sides are in touch regarding the date of foreign secretary-level talks”.

India and Pakistan last month mutually agreed to a short deferment of the talks after the Pathankot terror attack.

“However, Kher replied that he would not be able to visit Pakistan due to other commitments”, the spokesman said.

To another query, he said that questions about Dawood Ibrahim have been asked several times in the past and reiterated Pakistan’s position that he was not present in the country.
