Built around youth and commitment, an overhauled India will look to capitalise on the enthusiasm of the freshers when they lock horns with emerging regional powerhouse Afghanistan in the final of South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup here tomorrow.
With 20 minutes remaining, the deadlock was finally broken when Zubayr Amiri slotted the ball through the legs of Gurpreet after an intelligent pass from Shayesteh had unlocked the India defence but parity was short-lived and after just two minutes it was all square when hesitancy from defender Sayed Mommad Hashemi allowed Lalpekhlua to knock Chhetri’s cushioned header past Azizi for a quick equaliser.
The British coach also warned that the Indian defenders will have to be at the top of their game in order to keep the in-form Afghan strikers at bay. In the middle of all that India had a reprieve as the resultant shot came off the post.
Sunil Chhetri, who had his share of hits and misses in the game, then increased India’s lead in the first half of the extra-time with a free kick.
The bar denied Jeje early on in the second half.
The match stretched into extra-time after the scores were tied 1-1 after regular time.
Meanwhile, India coach Stephen Constantine feels that Afghanistan will be the favourites when the teams meet in the SAFF Championship final. Going into the final, not many gave India a chance as Afghanistan had demolished their opponents enroute to final. Two minutes on, Chhetri received a cross from Narzary into the box and the skipper headed the ball for an unmarked Jeje.
In the 85th minute, Narayan Das came close to taking the lead for India, when his chip from 25 yards earned a finger touch save from the Afghanistan Goalkeeper. “We now have a group of players who fight and compete for positions”. Although Jairu cut-inside and shot with venom, the shot flied over the bar.
Kohli remains committed to cricket but is an active football enthusiast on the side which is testified in the fact that he holds shares in the FC Goa team in the Indian Super League (ISL) and is also their brand ambassador.
Afghanistan have been one of the most impressive teams in the tournament, thrashing Sri Lanka 5-0 in the semifinal.
With the fans hollering their nation too, spirits of the Men in Blue bolstered as they committed their heart and soul into the remaining time.

Asked about the importance of captain Sunil Chhetri’s role, the Briton said he will not pinpoint a single player and the team will have to play as a unit.
