According to reports, on so many occasions, the organisation has seen friction and distrust among the member states, but India’s inclusion in the group is likely to lift its influence in the global arena.
Asked about Pakistan also getting membership of SCO, Mehta said India’s membership of the SCO or any other bloc is not “predicated” by absense of any country.
The SCO is a political, economic and military alliance that includes Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. “In line with its active and long-standing support to India’s entry to the NSG club as a full-fledged member, France called on its members, who are meeting on June 23 in Seoul, to take a positive decision”, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and global development plan said in a statement.
Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on the occasion of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and thanked him for supporting Pakistan’s bid to join the Nuclear Supplier’s Group. Pakistan and Iran are also waiting for official membership. According to Ushakov, Russia and China are working on more than 50 document which can be signed on the sidelines of the visit in the presence of Putin and Xi Jinping.
India and Pakistan are expected to sign preliminary membership memorandum at the SCO summit in Tashkent on June 23-24 and will become full-fledged members at the 2017 SCO summit in Kazakhstan.
India’s association with SCO began in 2005, when it was inducted into it as an observer. “More than 30 documents have to be acceded aligned our processes with what has already been agreed by other SCO members”, Mehta said.
