India, Kenya affirm commitment to renew Cultural Exchange Programme

“Our historical people-to-people ties provide a strong basis to our wide-ranging partnership, which extends from agriculture and health to developmental assistance; from trade and commerce to investment; from closer contacts between our peoples to capacity building; and from regular political consultations to defence and security cooperation”, he said. Without naming Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that all those who shelter terrorists should be condemned while asserting that India wanted a lasting partnership with Africa.

The meeting was attended by deputy president William Ruto; eighty business leaders from India accompanied the PM Modi.

Modi described as a “good achievement” completion of a water supply augmentation project in Dar-es-Salaam with the Indian aid of US$I00 million.

“Our countries are major players in the global economy and share a common vision at shaping the development agenda through (India-Brazil-South Africa Dialogue Forum), Brics and other related trade platforms”. Addressing the students at the University of Nairobi here, Modi pitched for a world free from terror and hate, saying safety and security of people and societies is essential for realising the benefits of the economic progress.

“The bonds between the two countries are long-standing and rich”, he said.

President Kenyatta expressed the desire for Kenya to have a pharmaceutical drug manufacturing capacity locally, with the support of India.

On his part, Modi said that it was a matter of “great privilege and honour for all of us that President Kenyatta is also among us to grace the occasion”. In 2013, an attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi left at least 67 people dead, including Indians. Kenyatta was the leader of Kenya from independence in 1963 till his death in 1978, serving first as Prime Minister (1963-64) and then as President (1964-78).
