India launches first Ubuntu-powered smartphone
Spain-based handset maker BQ has launched the Aquaris E4.5 and Aquaris E5 Ubuntu edition smartphone in the Indian market. The phones will be available on Snapdeal by end of August at a price of Rs 11,999 for the Aquaris E4.5 and Rs 13,499 for the Aquaris E5.

After creating the hype, Spanish manufacturer BQ has finally brought in the first Ubuntu series phones into the shores of India.
Powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek quad core Cortex A7 processor and 1GB RAM, the phone features 8GB storage with a microSD card slot that supports cards of up to 32GB.
The Aquaris E5 Ubuntu Edition features a 5-inch 720p HD IPS display along with a 5MP front camera and 13MP rear camera, powered by high quality Largan lenses and BSI sensors. Both offer dual SIM functionalities and will be shipped in Black and White colour variants.
According to German Lopez, the company’s Chief Operating Officer, the launch of Aquaris E4.5 and Aquaris E5 and their great success in Europe made them realize the emerging need of Ubuntu smartphones in India as well and how Indian market can benefit them immensely for they have experienced a flourishing business in the realm of PCs here. The phone would be available on Snap deal by end of August.
Canonical has just announced that Aquaris E4.5 and E5 Ubuntu Editions will launch in India through Snapdeal, which is the biggest online marketplace in that country.
We have to wait and watch to see how these handsets would face the over crowded smartphone market in India. It is powered by a 2,150 mAh battery. We also know that Ubuntu will also land on phones in Russian Federation in the next few months. The 13-megapixel camera (f/2.2) is located on the back of the Aquaris E5, and a 5-megapixel shooter (f/2.4) is available up front. The phone has an internal storage space of 8 GB. Other than that it has 16 GB of internal memory, 32 GB expandable memory slot, WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, 1 GB RAM, 1.3 Ghz quad core processor, Global Positioning System with A-GPS and a 2500 mAh battery.

The Aquarius E5.5 comes with a HD resolution 5-inch display with 294 ppi pixel density and Dragontrail glass protection. “I am thrilled that our partners BQ and Snapdeal have the drive and foresight to make this happen”, said Cristian Parrino, VP of Mobile at Canonical.
