India’s Internet user base has increased by 49% as compared to a year ago. In comparison, it took 10 years to move from 10 million to 100 million and 3 years to reach 200 million.

Otherwise, a few interesting facts gleaned from the report show that India has the third largest internet users’ base now and will overtake the United states by December but trail behind China, which has more than 600 million internet users, said the report.

The Internet and Mobile Association of India(IMAI) and IMRB worldwide reveals their findings in a report, “Internet in India 2015”. China now leads with more than 600 million internet users.

It may seem like a huge number, but if we take into consideration India’s population of 1.2 billion people we can notice that not even half of the population has constant access to Internet.

According to the report, men dominate the Internet user base in the country, forming about 71% of the total user base, while women constitute about 29% of the Internet users.

Small metros are also witnessing a high user growth rate of 60% and other cities, including Surat, have the highest Internet ownership in the country. India’s mobile internet user base in rural areas is expected to reach 87 million by December 2015 and 109 million by June 2016.

Much of this phenomenal growth is because of smartphones and an increase in rural users.

Last year too, IAMAI estimated similar figures and at the end of the three-year period, it just added up the number without giving scientific explanation. However, in Urban India, the ratio between male to female internet users is 62:38.

According to the report, gaming through social-networking sites has picked up fast with 36% of the user base, up from 21% in the past year. About 75% of working women access Internet daily, and a similar percentage of Internet users among both the genders access the Web at least once a week. Around 37 percent of males internet users go online daily, while only 23 percent of the female internet users are accessing internet daily. The study also found that out of all the internet non-users surveyed in the 35 cities as part of this study, 11.4 million non-users are willing to access the internet in the next one year and over 2/3rd of them intend to do so through mobile phones.
