India planning to add eight new major ports, says Gadkari

Union Minister for road transport and highways and shipping, Nitin Gadkari has claimed that Sagarmala Port Project, which will get completed in 5 years, will add to industrial growth and create many new jobs.

Mumbai: As part of its aggressive plans for port-led development, the government on Wednesday said it is looking to add eight major ports to the already existing 12.

SEEKING Rs 1 lakh crore investment in developing sea ports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday promised to personally handhold investors for a “safe, secure and satisfactory” berthing so as to transform country’s 7,500-km long coastline an “engine of growth”.

The summit provided a platform for participation, engagement and interaction from 42 countries. Gadkari was speaking at the second day of the India Maritime Summit in Mumbai on Friday.

Stressing on the importance of maritime transport, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that everyone should make sure that our lifestyle, transport systems and trading behaviour do not spoil the ecology of the oceans. The thematic session on Maritime Nations highlighted the global nature of the shipping industry and the importance of co-operation & collaboration between maritime nations.

“He said India’s vast coastline of 7500 kilometers offers a huge investment opportunity”. “Shipbuilding and ship-repairing is a potential area of investment”.

He also said, the architect of the Indian Constitution Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar, on whose 125th birth anniversary, the Maritime India Summit was being inaugurated, was also the architect of the water and navigation policy in India. Union Shipping Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari, interacted with over 100 foreign delegates and ensured them the easy of doing business in India.

Meanwhile, the shipping ministry has signed an MoU with South Korea for cooperation in port-related matters. It could mobilise investment of about Rs 4 lakh crore in India’s infrastructure sector over the next 10 years.

One of the top attractions at the Summit was the Maritime Heritage Museum, built in the form of a container ship with interiors resembling a Spanish Galleon.

The Ministry of Shipping is showcasing about 250 projects with investment opportunity in the maritime sector. “This is the right time to come to India”.
