In an unusual incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had yesterday begun to walk past the guard of honour presented on his arrival in Moscow for a summit meeting with President Vladimir Putin even while the national anthem was still being played and had to be pulled back by a Russian official.
Putin said that Russian Federation supported India’s “strengthening role in resolving global and regional problems” and backed New Delhi’s bid for permanent membership of the UN Security Council.
“The pace of our cooperation in nuclear energy is increasing”, Modi said.
Russian Federation launched the first nuclear unit at India’s Kudankulam power station in June a year ago and would complete building another one in “a matter of a few weeks”, Putin said.
The Indian side also requested the Russian side to share with it any information relating to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry said Sharif responded, “Please come, you are our guest, please come and have tea with me”, Reuters reported.
On the basis of the deal, Russia’s state-owned Almaz-Antey will manufacture S-400 air defence systems jointly with Reliance Defence for the Indian armed forces.
In a statement, Reliance Defense said that “the two sides identified the air defense missile systems… radars and automated control systems as areas of partnership”.
“We are working towards ensuring best possible infrastructure in India… because of efforts of our government the economy has witnessed sustained growth”, he said, adding “we are committed to ensure a stable and transparent taxation regime”.
Modi said that with one of the world’s largest reserves of hydrocarbons, Russian Federation can be a critical source of energy security for India. “Both leaders also underscored the need to understand the issues, concerns and desires of each other”.
The two leaders met Wednesday evening for a one-on-one dinner chat that was closed to press and held in the company of only their translators, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, calling it “very constructive and warm”.
“India might be the only country where there are no limits on sales from Russian Federation”, said Alexander Khramchikhin, deputy director of the Moscow-based Institute for Military and Political Analysis.
Russian Federation and India were close allies during the Cold War, but recently the relationship has become more complex.

“Mutual investments now average around $11 billion and we want to increase them to $30-50 billion by 2025”, Jaishankar said Tuesday, according to the Moscow Times.
